The US SPEC Team spends a lot of time in the field visiting jobsites or conducting product demos with our customers and end-users. Our interaction with the end-users of our products allows us to get a first-hand look at how our products are being applied and how they perform on the job. 

The Repair Center of our site is dedicated to posting videos, photos and documents that showcase “do's and don’ts" in the field.  The content in our Repair Center is not professionally done, but rather raw footage, photos and videos of our products in action provided by US SPEC professionals.

Bridge Repair - US SPEC STR Mortar CI

The following photos are from a bridge where the existing curbs are having some repairs done. The product selected is US SPEC STR Mortar CI. The area to be repaired is formed and the material poured. Immediately after finishing, US SPEC Maxcure Resin Clear curing compound is applied to the freshly placed mortar. After it’s cured, the repairs are ground to match the existing profile. After all repairs are complete, a traffic coating will be applied to all the curbs and sidewalk surfaces.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete - Protect with Surface Hardener

Contractors, when you you use surface retarder to expose aggregate you ALSO expose air entrained concrete to the elements and freeze/thaw cycles. Best to put a coat of good surface hardener i.e. US SPEC Permalith followed by a quality surface sealer, i.e. US SPEC BRS-25, Roca 1315 or either of the Hydrasheen (15% or 30%) products. Please protect that beautiful NEW concrete!!

Matching Repair to Existing Concrete - US SPEC Quickset

The picture with the door is a formed wall that didn’t release well so they needed a repair product to match the concrete on the opposing wall picture. The contractor demo'd multiple products and US SPEC Quickset was the best match. A thin layer was applied and re-stamped. Could hardly tell the difference.

Bus Maintenance Facility - US SPEC Dense Top LR

These photos are from a bus maintence facility that is to receive a white shake on floor hardener. US SPEC Dense Top LR was selected. These photos are from the onsite mock-up panel. It’s always good to do a mock up to ensure compatibility with the mix design and that the final product is acceptable. After curing, this project is to be sealed with US SPEC Permalith, a reactive floor sealer designed to further densify the floor.

Pool repair - Quickset

The following is a pool repair where some chipped areas are in need of repair. The pool is full, so a non-sag material was requested so it didn’t fall into the water. 

After reviewing the areas, US SPEC Quickset was recommended as the repair material. It’s non-sag with faster set times which made it an ideal maerial for a quick turnaround and lasting repair.

Home Foundation Repairs

The following photos are of some repairs to a home foundation. There were some areas of poor consolidation in the concrete, and repairs were needed.  It was recommended that all areas be mechanically prepped until all unsound concrete was removed.  For the smaller repair areas, US SPEC V/O CI was recommended. There were also some larger areas and some corners that needed repairs. For these areas, forms were used, and US SPEC STR Mortar CI was used as a Form and Pour Repair material.

Help Concrete Look its Best

What to do if the concrete doesn’t look uniform?

As anyone knows, ready mix concrete from the same company, from same plan on the same day doesn’t always LOOK the same. These precast column sections on new Stadium are within design tolerance, but not very uniform as you can see. We’re working with a local distributor to provide a color matched repair material for the bug holes and minor surface repairs. and a coating material to help even out the color from one section to the next. We’re also providing a top quality, VOC compliant sealer to protect it all from the elements.

Simple Trick - Great Results

Have a little blushing or build up of old sealers? Give new life to concrete by spraying a little Xylene.

Protecting Concrete from the Elements

When concrete is not protected from salt and/or snowmelt products with a good surface hardener and/or sealer, this look is inevitable. If you like exposed aggregate then eventually in freeze/thaw climates you’ll get there by neglect. But if you want to protect your investment we have a full line of such sealers.

H2 to the Rescue

The following before and after photos are from a condo project where a concrete pour was hit by a sudden snowstorm. In the process of protecting the floor, some foot prints were made in the fresh concrete. This area is to be covered by future flooring. The contractor reached out to US SPEC for a patching recommendation. After a visit to the site, US SPEC H2, a two component concrete repair mortar was recommended. The contractor and owner were pleased with the results and the product's performance.

Moving Cracks

Contractor has a tilt up building that is only 5 years old with cracks that not only exist in the walls, but have transferred to the columns. Asked for a product solution and sales rep informed them that they appear to be moving cracks and would not recommend our products.

Resurfacing with R3

Resurface loading dock at Williams Form Engineering in Portland using US SPEC R3. This mock-up has been run over at least once a week for last 5 months and still holding strong.

Transpatch Concrete - New Mexico interstate

The following photos are from a project on an interstate in New Mexico. These areas will be repaired with US SPEC Transpatch Concrete. These areas have been repaired with a couple different materials over the past, but none are holding up. These areas will be saw cut and and unsound materials will be removed.

Importance of Surface Prep! 

The following are some photos of a repair that has failed due to freeze thaw cycles and poor surface preparation. The material is now popping loose. Water is getting in-between the patch material and existing substrate, the surface is smooth creating a poor bond, the patch stays intact and sound but cannot bond to the smooth substrate. The material will need to be removed and the surface will need to be abraded to create a rougher surface profile.

Concrete Checking - Mule Creek Prison; Ione, CA

The pour back area on this tilt up project experienced a normal condition with concrete called "checking."

The problem was that the floor was being cleaned 3X a day, which highlighted the cracks.  In order to fix this, the contractor used US SPEC Quickset, but eliminated any aggregate, in order for the material to penetrate the tiny cracks.  The next day after application, a silane was used to limit moisture penetration.

Shrinkage Crack Repair - US SPEC Quickset

Most walls, if they’re long enough and don’t have control joints, will crack. Some people understand that and don’t mind. Others....not so much. This customer didn't want to see the cracks in their brand new walls. We recommended that the contractor sift the larger sand out of Quickset and fill the cracks using a toothbrush, making sure to keep the margins clean. Quickset is the perfect color to match cured concrete so the cracks become unnoticeable to the eye. You would really have to know they’re there to see them.

Light Reflective Hardener - US SPEC Dense Top LR

Here is a photo of saw-cut concrete from a Caterpillar dealership.  This light reflective hardener was applied so that they could drive their steel tracked equipment on the floor without damaging the surface.

Floor Patching - US SPEC H2

The following are photos where a patching material was used to level a floor.  The material was placed from a feather edge to 1” in depth.  After placement and curing they found some hollow sounding spots. The carpet was removed and the material was found to be debonded from the concrete substrate.  The reason for the issue was inadequate floor preparation. The topping was solid and stayed together, but couldn’t bond due to the smooth, dirty floor.  You can see on the loose pieces of material, the dirty substrate transferred to the repair material.  After proper surface preparation was discussed, it was recommended the floor be cleaned and abraded before another patching material was placed.  US SPEC H2 was recommended as the repair material to use.

Bridge Deck Repair - Transpatch Concrete

The following photos are from a Transpatch Concrete repair application. The material was placed into a saw-cut area on a bridge deck. The material was mixed in a mortar mixer and after final finishing, Maxcure Wax White was applied as a curing compound.

TP Mortar Repair - Too much water and insufficient floor prep

Garage floor where TP Mortar was placed with excessive amount of water.  Poor workmanship, insufficient surface preparation and over watering lead to the garage floor ultimately cracking.  The homeowner in an effort to ease placement, added more than the recommended water.  You can see the bubbles and splatter from wet material.

Repair damage on freshly placed stairs - US SPEC Quickset

Side form was hit on these freshly placed stairs.  Photos below show the damage, patch applied and finished repair.  US SPEC Quickset was used.  A versatile product with great color match for concrete.

Pool Deck/Outdoor Area - Quickset

The following photos are from a project where some walls were poured around a pool deck/outdoor area and some repairs are needed. The owner wants all the walls to look similar in color. The contractor was looking for recommendations. For the deeper repairs US SPEC Quickset was recommended. After that the entire area could be rubbed with 321 which will result in a more monolithic look between all the walls.

MP Grout Application

One week after placement of MP Grout, the area was power washed. The engineer noticed micro fine cracks that normally would not be noticeable.  However, while wet, this raised some concerns.  No need to worry though, as this will not affect the long term life of the grout base!

TP Mortar - Before and After

Yes, US SPEC TP Mortar can be stamped. To repair this stamped sidewalk the contractor needed something with a tenacious bond that could be stamped to repair some spalling on a sidewalk. He removed all the loose material at the edges, pressure washed the area to be patched, applied a scrub coat and then TP Mortar. When it had set a little, he sprayed liquid release and stamped it to match the existing pattern.  He then put a coat of stain on to even out the color. TP Mortar is an extremely versatile repair material.

Vertical Repair - US SPEC V/O Patch

The following photos are from a school where there were some areas of poor consolidation of the concrete and some voids were present. The loose unsound material was chipped away. The areas are smaller and will not require a form and pour application. A hand applied vertical repair material was needed for the repairs. The areas are abraded to a good rough surface profile and prior to placing the patching material, water will be applied to the substrate. The repair material recommended here was US SPEC V/O Patch. This can be applied from a feather edge to a 2 inches in a single lift.

Parking Structure Repair - H2 and TP Mortar

When your welded staircase doesn't line up level with your poured in place parking structure, what do you do?

  • If you're a fan of single component structural repair material you use TP Mortar to blend it in.
  • If you're a fan or two component structural repair material you use H2.

Pikus Construction had this issue on a parking structure and wanted to try both materials to see which would be easier to apply.

JUNE 2017

Ramp Repair - R3

The following photos are from a ramp where the existing concrete has deteriorated in areas. US SPEC R3 was recommended as a repair material. R3 is a rapid setting patch that can be used vertically, horizontally and overhead. The material can be applied from a feather edge to 2" in a single lift. After placing the mortar the concrete will be coated to match the existing color.

Soo Locks - Great Lakes

The Soo Locks on the Michigan border with Canada, Lake Superior connecting to the lower Great Lakes.

Atlas Construction needed to dowel in rock anchors to be able to switch out their locking system.

Felt RA Grout was more “forgiving” than using plain cement.  They had over filled the holes and needed to provide a two-step grouting process.

Concrete Repairs using R3 and 321

The following are photos of a couple concrete structures that are in need of repair. The repairs will consist of some edges needing to be built back up and brought to their existing elevations, as well as some surfaces that have shown wear and will be patched with a surface coating. The materials recommended were US SPEC R3 and 321. These repairs will need to be done during low flow periods, as some of the repair areas will be submerged during high flows.

Curing - It's Important!

What do engineers and municipal inspectors know that most homebuilders do not?   How important curing is in achieving maximum strengths in concrete. Look on any of our technical data sheets and you'll notice the cure step. This curb and gutter has been cured, as required, with US SPEC Maxcure Resin Clear. The product comes out white, so the inspector and applier can see proper coverage. In due time, when not over-applied, it dries clear. After providing a proper ASTM C309 cure, it then begins to break down in the UV rays, along with traffic, and dissipates away.

US SPEC TP Mortar was product of choice by Wildish Construction in Portland, OR to meet requirements for 2% slope for sidewalk.

STR Mortar

The following is a photo of a repair where there were tight spaces between rebar and post tension cables. A repair material was needed that was fluid enough to fill all the voids and give the placers enough time to finish it after placing. US SPEC STR Mortar was recommended as the repair material.

Substation Wall

The following photos are of a wall that was formed at an electrical substation. The contractor was asking for a rub/coating that they could place on the walls to provide a uniform appearance. US SPEC 321 was recommended. For any deeper bug holes or defects in the concrete, US SPEC Quickset was recommended to be applied first then coated over with the 321.

Slab Damage

When a steel installer drills too close to the edge of a slab it's US SPEC Quickset to the rescue. Easy to mix, apply, shave and rub out to match the existing finish, when it dries it will look like the damage was never there. I love recommending this product for this type of repair.

User Beware!

When a contractor says your grout is not performing as designed and you visit the site and see this sticker on an additive they're mixing into your grout.......well it doesn't take a genius to figure out why. Our products are all tested and proven to work when used as directed. Putting anything extra into them, particularly something corrosive, voids any warranty. This particular additive is supposed to be a Corrosion Inhibitor. How something with a "corrosive" warning sticker can inhibit corrosion is beyond me. The fact that it is designed to be used in ready mix concrete may also be some indicator why it caused our grout to not perform as designed. Grout is not the same as concrete! Only use our engineered products as directed and you'll always be satisfied with the results.


Form and Pour

US SPEC HE Grout was product of choice on a form and pour repair in Idaho. Repair area measured approximately 2'x3'x8".  No lifts or pea gravel required.  Forms were left in place for a minimum of 20 hours.

Fast Setting Repair

These photos are taken from an airport maintenance facility. The spalled concrete needed to be repaired with a fast setting material, since there is constant traffic in the vicinity. All loose material needs to be removed ASAP to prevent possible damage to aircraft engines. After removal, a fast setting material is needed to be placed in repair areas. US SPEC R3 was suggested for smaller hand applied applications. For larger saw cut pours, US SPEC Transpatch Concrete was recommended.

Weld Plates Cover

The following are photos from a precast building being erected in the Denver Metro area. After placing and anchoring panels, the voids form lifting brackets and weld plates need to be covered up. The materials used here were US SPEC Transpatch, and in areas where structural grout was needed the contractor used US SPEC MP Grout.

Proper Surface Prep

Clean saw cut edges, and good surface profile. Filled with water and ready to patch. The last steps are removing any standing water and doing a scrub coat with a properly mixed patching material. These repairs are being made with US SPEC Transpatch and with this kind of of surface prep, the repair should last indefinitely.

Elevator Shaft Repair

The following photos are of an elevator shaft where the ceiling height was too low to accommodate the elevators. After removing the concrete, cleaning up all loose debris and fixing the post tensioned cables, the area was ready for repair. There were two different fixes recommended.  For a hand applied material US SPEC R3 was recommended. If a form and pour was selected, holes would be drilled through the slab from above and US SPEC STR Mortar could be placed.

Poor surface prep

Which is the top and which is the bottom of this failed repair? It's hard to tell when the surface prep is so poor. The bottom has visible air bubbles because those who applied it not only didn't properly roughen the surface, but they also didn't do a scrub coat to eliminate air from being trapped at the surface. Repairs are doomed w/o adherence to instructions and proper procedures.

Driveway Resurfacing

The following are photos of a drive where they are looking to have it resurfaced. US Spec NU-Top was recommended as repair material. The deeper spalled areas can be filled in first with US Spec Quickset. It is recommended to do one square at a time using the existing joints as starting and stopping points. It was addressed that the existing cracks could transfer through the new surface coating. This is common when placing cementious materials over existing cracks.

New Door

The following is from a project where a opening needed to be enlarged to accommodate a door. The concrete was removed to allow clearance for the door. Before this can take place the substrate needed to be smoothed out. An overhead repair mortar was needed that could be applied from a feather edge to approx 1/2" US SPEC VO Patch was selected. With the ability to be applied up to 2 inches in a single lift this allowed for one application and then the paint can be applied before the door installation.

Wall Repair

Sometimes the destroyers do the prep work for you. When careless excavators bust off edges, it is often adequate prep for repair. These breaks require no more than a good washing and proper SSD. Quickset 20 or VO Patch, with a scrub coat, will have this wall looking as good as new.

Elevator Revived 

A form-finish is not always desirable.  Here an old unsightly elevator shaft was given a new and interesting look with a coat of 3-2-1, an application of acid stain and a coat of Roca 1315 (a water-based decorative sealer). What's old can look new again with the right products and craftsmanship.

Deteriorating Walkway

The following photos are of a walkway that was topped with a coating that is deteriorating. The material is cracking and de-bonding in areas. The owner would like a new repair done. The recommendation was to remove all  unsound material with mechanical abrasion after ensuring a good surface profile was achieved the area is to be saturated for 24 hours. Just prior to placing the repair material any standing water should be removed. The repair material recommended was TP Mortar. With the ability to go from feather edge to 3 inches, only one application would be needed.

Cascade Laundry, Bellingham, WA

The contractor,  Foundation Restoration, cut away old, damaged concrete to expose rebar.  Formed and patched with Transpatch on the lower windowsill.  Then STR Mortar for the top and sides of window.  Came back and grinded edges smooth.

Rehabilitation Project, Denver, CO

The following is a photo of a wall in North Denver that is part of a rehabilitation project. The existing concrete walls are weathered and showing their age. The contractor needs to smooth them out before an architectural coating is applied.  US SPEC 321 is being applied to the walls to give a smooth even substrate for the coating to be applied.

Versatile TP Mortar

The following photos are from a retail store where entrance mats are to be installed. During the initial pour for the concrete floors, a void was made to allow for the mats. These areas needed to be leveled before placement of the mats. The floor was ground/abraded and US SPEC TP Mortar was installed at approximately 1.5 inches in depth. After the tracks for the mats are installed, another application of approximately ¼ inches will finish the project. TP Mortar was selected for is range of application depth allowing one product to do both portions of the pour.

Sealing Flow-Top HD

Flow-Top HD was bubbling when a solvent sealer was placed.  To solve this issue, spray or pour a small amount of solvent (I use xylene, readily available in most areas) on the area wher eyou have the bubbles.  Lightly scrub with a natural fibered brush (plastic brushes can melt when exposed to solvents). The solvent will re-emulsify the resins and the a light scrubbing will help “lay” down any rings or bubbles.  Allow it dry and check to see if the blemishes were removed.

This same process can be used to let moisture out of a blushing sealer.  If done on older sealed surfaces it can rejuvenate the look of the sealer.  The entire area usually needs to be done so everything matches.

Highway Project, Denver, CO

This photo is a highway project where a new divider or Jersey Barrier is being constructed in the Denver Metro Area. This process is done with a slip form machine.  These move at a slow speed and form the barrier as they crawl along. The reinforcing steel is already in place and is encapsulated in the barrier as the concrete is placed. Finishers follow the machine and fix any imperfections in the freshly placed concrete. After finishing operations are complete, the concrete needs to be cured. A white pigmented cure was called for here, and US SPEC Maxcure Wax White was used. Maxcure Wax White is a water-emulsion, VOC compliant, white pigmented, dissipating wax concrete curing compound. Maxcure Wax White has been formulated to form a membrane film on the surface of the concrete optimizing water retention for maximum concrete hydration and compressive strength development. The white pigment increases reflectance, cooling the freshly poured concrete. Reflectance reduces surface temperature, thus minimizing vapor pressure and moisture loss.

Beware of Bad Design!

Notice how there is not a solid plate beneath this heavy industrial catalytic converter to distribute the weight onto the bearing pad below?  No cementitious grout can take the concentrated pressure and vibration this piece of equipment can deliver without a properly sized bearing plate. Surface Preparation

Curing New Curbs 

These photos were taken from a neighborhood in Denver, CO. The contractor went through and replaced the existing curbs with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible curbs, ramps and detection tiles. They removed existing concrete and poured new concrete in the same day to minimize closures and impact on the pedestrian traffic in the area.

The contractor used US SPEC Maxcure Resin Clear as a curing compound. After the final finishing took place the cure was sprayed applied to the fresh concrete. The cure forms a membrane over the surface of the concrete to prevent it from drying out too quickly. Maxcure Resin Clear will break down over time with exposure to UV rays and foot traffic.

Patching Pre-Cast 

These photos are from a precast concrete plant that uses US SPEC Quickset 20 to repair any defects that occur on their castings as well as tie holes from forming. The repairs range from small defects in the casting process to larger chips and breaks that can occur while moving the pieces. The product’s ability to go from feather edge to 2" in a single lift allows many of the repairs to be done in a single lift. Larger repairs can be done in multiple lifts.

Glossy Finish Fast 

A new Pop’n Sweets store in Utah elected to use US SPEC BRS-25, a high gloss sealer, over their acid stained floor because they wanted a fast drying, shiny wear surface. The installer was able to apply two coats on Sunday and it was dry enough to install cabinets and refrigerators on Monday.

Due to its solvent carrying agent it's better to put it on when very few people are around. Always make sure you have proper ventilation.

Highway Tendon Grouting

This picture shows US SPEC NA Grout in a fluid consistency. The product was mixed per bag with a paddle mixer and poured into the funnel which then goes into the vacuum pump. NA Grout was then vacuum pumped to fill voids discovered in the ducts of bridges in San Antonio, TX. Pre-cast segments are joined together by bundled post-tensioned cables called tendons located within ducts inside the segments.

Poor Surface Preparation Causes More Work 

The following photos are a good example of why surface preparation is so vital to the performance of any patching material. The photos are from a drive thru for a business in the Denver Metro area. The finish of the original concrete pour was not satisfactory to the owner and the original placer was asked to repair certain areas.

A patching/leveling material was used to smooth out the rough looking areas. The areas were not prepared correctly and as a result the patching material began to de-bond from the surface. The areas were not cleaned or abraded, the traffic markings that were painted on the surface were left as is and coated over. The material never had a chance to bond to painted surface such as this. Given Colorado’s climate and many freeze thaw cycles during our winter months the improperly prepared surface aided in water getting between the patching compound and original substrate.

The photos show the material not bonding and flaking off. The entire area needs to be resurfaced. A proper cleaning and abrading of the surface is needed before any new material can be placed. A scarifying machine was recommended to roughen the surface adequately as well as remove the traffic coatings.

Sweet Concrete Repair

When dates are harvested the sugar is very hard on concrete. The old concrete “apron” on the processing building was refurbished with 1/4-3/8" of HUB Special Patch (US SPEC H2). An “apron” is the concrete in front of a garage or structure that is generally used for loading and unloading.

Refurbishing Water Tank Walls 

The following photos are from a water tank in Denver, Colorado. Some areas of the walls and columns needed some aesthetic repairs. The material needed to be applied very thin and dry to a color similar to the existing concrete. US SPEC 3-2-1 was recommended to the contractor. They were pleased with the uniform color and easy to apply smooth consistency. Pictures show a wall in the resurfacing process and the finished project.

Leveling Concrete Walls 

The following photos are from a water tank project where some concrete walls needed to be leveled before a concrete lid could be placed on the walls. The contractor needed a repair material that could be applied from a feather edge to 1” depth. H2 was recommended, this is a two-component product. The contractor placed some temporary forms along the edges of the repair area and screeded the H2 to the top of the forms. The contractor liked the smooth consistency of the material and how it was very easy to apply and finish.

Quick Road Repair 

Transpatch repair on Antelope Drive in Layton, Utah. 

A viaduct was sorely under engineered and couldn't be closed down. They needed something that allowed traffic to open back up as soon as possible. Transpatch met the requirement and has performed superbly.

Bridge Repair 

The following photos are from a bridge repair project in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The existing bridge needed repairs along the edges of the structure and to the expansion joints. The contractor needed a repair material that was fluid enough for form and pour applications, could be poured in deep applications. The material also needed to be rapid setting as the bridge needed to reopen to traffic daily. US SPEC Transpatch was selected as a repair material. Transpatch can be extended with gravel for deeper applications and is fluid enough to be placed around the reinforcing steel.

This project also utilized galvanic anodes to help prevent corrosion of the reinforcing steel. Transpatch has been tested and is compatible with sacrificial anodes.

Failed Slab at Fire Station

The following are pictures of a concrete repair at a fire station. The ground below the concrete settled causing the slab to fail and drop into the void. This left a depression and was an issue when the trucks moved in and out of the vehicle bays. A fix was needed. To permanently repair this, the area should be removed entirely and a full depth repair take place. This was not in the budget for the year so a more temporary repair was approved. US SPEC Transpatch was selected as a repair material for its fast turnaround times and because the material was on the approved products list for the DOT. The material was being mixed by hand mixers so the repair was broken into sections to make sure it could be finished in the products working time. A 2x4 was temporarily fastened to the substrate to act as a form. The material was mixed and scrubbed in the surface and finished to the existing grade. After setting, the form was moved and the process was repeated.

Grouting of a Base Plate

Placement of HUB 100 II (US SPEC MP Grout) underneath structural steel at the “flowable” mix rate. Swinterton Construction wanted the higher strength so they had to help the grout under the plate with a piece of metal strapping. When doing a really thin application there is a lot of surface tension between the grout, the plate (they're putting the grout under) and the concrete (they're putting the grout on top of). Unless the mix is completely “fluid”, the grout sometimes needs help to move beneath the plates. The reason they don't go to “fluid” is because they want the higher strengths that they get when they keep it at the “flowable” rate. Building a gravity feeding grout form is another method of forcing grout to flow across the entire plate.

VO Patch CI Rescues New Concrete Steps

VO Patch CI to the rescue. Two day old concrete steps were chipped by landscaping contractors. I was able to go train the concrete workers on VO Patch CI. The color match was beautiful, as usual, and the Contractor LOVED the ease of use of the patch. He also loved that he was able to shave it even with the existing concrete and then blend with a broom.

Frozen Floor Needs Repair

The following photos are from an interior slab that was poured last winter. Some sections of the slab appear to have frozen while the concrete was still fresh and small spalls have appeared. These floors are hard troweled to a point where they are slightly burnished and appear darker in color.

The floors are scheduled to receive a clear sealer. The contractor is looking for a fix to repair the spalls. These are tough repairs to make. A product needs to be smooth and contain very small aggregate. After visiting the site, US SPEC TP Mortar and Micro Topping were suggested. The contractor will place some samples and see how they dry out. Custom site coloring was discussed as a possible need to more replicate the color of the existing concrete. After allowing the patches to cure out we can evaluate the color. These repairs are cosmetic, normal surface prep of saw cutting and shot blasting is not an option here as that would cause more of a blemish then the initial flaw.

Proper Preparation for STR Mortar

This is what proper preparation looks like for STR Mortar. These are precast support columns on a parking structure in Boise, ID that were showing signs of failure due to water infiltration causing oxidation of the rebar. The contractor cut the edges of the repairs and exposed the rebar with a chipping hammer. He then sand blasted all the rust off the existing rebar. He caught it very early and as a result there was very little degradation of the steel.

Worn Out Garage Floor Needs Repair - H2

The following pictures are of a parking garage built in the 1960s. The garage has some existing repairs that are in need of replacement as well as some other areas where the existing slab has deteriorated and needs repair. 

After evaluating the slab it was determined the older patches would need to be removed and the substrate repaired. For new patches it was recommended to saw cut around the perimeter and remove the deteriorated concrete. A couple sections will need full-depth repairs as the entire slab has failed and the lower decks can be seen through the openings. For these types or repairs forms will need to be attached to the underside of the slab. For the non full-depth repairs, pressure washing was recommended to remove debris and abrade the surface. The surface should be saturated surface dry (SSD) before applying repair materials. 

The contractor would like to use one repair material for these repairs. US SPEC H2 was recommended. H2 bonds very well and has great abrasion resistance. H2 can be used up to an inch in depth with a neat application and up to 4" with the addition of pea gravel. This flexibility allows the material to be used in virtually all of the repairs needed on this project.

Expansion Joint Maintenance 

Maintaining the expansion joint with foam on a sectional bridge replacement job at C. J. Strike Dam and Reservoir in Idaho. US SPEC GP Grout was used on the entire bridge between and beneath the precast bridge sections. It is pictured here mixed flowable and poured into the keyed end of every fourth precast section to maintain a joint to allow for expansion and contraction in Idaho's hot/cold temperature conditions.

The following are some pictures of an addition being put onto a building in Denver, CO. In these photos the contractor is using US SPEC Transpatch as a patching material. They like using Transpatch for these types of repairs due to the smooth consistency, dependable color from bag to bag and project to project. The faster setting times also allows them to move quickly and be able to finish the material sooner than a slower setting material.

Refreshing a Decorative Concrete Patio

The following pictures are of a decorative concrete patio that had been neglected for a couple of years. The owner wanted to know what the options were to refresh the look. After a good thorough scrubbing with a citrus based concrete cleaner the patio was still a little milky in spots. This is called "blushing" and is a result of moisture being trapped between the sealer and the concrete substrate. This can happen in many ways: sprinklers watering the patio, poor drainage, gutters and down spouts releasing on the patio are just a few examples. If this was new construction the most common culprit is a sealer being applied to a patio that was recently washed and did not dry out before a sealer was applied. After washing a concrete slab the surface will appear dry quickly, however there is still moisture trapped in the concrete that will make its way to the surface. Sun and heat will draw this moisture up and if a sealer is applied too soon it can cause the milky appearance common with blushing. One way to correct this issue is to do a solvent wipe. A solvent such as xylene can be spread on the surface and light scrubbed with a stiff brush; this will re-emulsify the resins and let the trapped moisture leave the surface. This is sometimes enough to bring a sealer back to life, sometimes after doing this another application of sealer will be needed to even out the surface and provide a more uniform appearance. These steps are for solvent based sealers only.

Leveling a Loft Floor

A loft's floor was unlevel up to 1 inch. Meaning there were areas in the the floor that "dipped" down approximately 1inch, if you were looking at the floor closely you would see almost waves in it. Workers profiled the substrate, primed the surface then applied US SPEC SLU (Self Leveling Underlayment). The finished floor was laminate.

Dry Pack MP Grout

The following are pictures of a US SPEC MP Grout dry pack application. A dry pack application will result in high strengths and faster strength gains over a fluid application. Dry pack applications, when possible, also do not need as much form work to be built. The material is placed from one side of the area to be grouted. The other side is braced to allow the compaction of the grout. To ensure good consolidation the grout needs to be compacted, in this case a block of wood was used to do this.  The grout is mix with just enough water so that when a handful is grabbed and squeezed it stays together. After placing the grout is finished and cured. Wet burlap was used on this project. Prior to placing the grout even with a dry pack consistency the substrate should be saturated surface dry (SSD), this means wetting the existing substrate but not having any standing water. This prevents the dry substrate from wicking moisture from the freshly placed grout.

H2 Demo in Washington

This picture shows an 1/8" H2 Demo in Bellingham, Washington. The customer had a 2,900' repair to perform on Orcas Island. He loved the "almost" self leveling full mix rate and how easy the formula was to finish and broom.

Multiple Products Used on Repair Job

The following are pictures of a parking garage deck that is being repaired. The surface has a traffic coating that is being removed so the concrete can be cleaned and prepped prior to repairs being made. There are a couple of different types of repairs needed on this project.

  • In areas subject to traffic, H2 was recommended.
  • Some of the deterioration has caused failure all the way through the slab and underlying precast segments as well. In these areas a form will be attached on the underside and repairs will be made, or a product like V/O Patch will be applied on the underside, before repairs are made to the surface.
  • Quick Set 20 was also recommended for some general purpose repairs on the structure.

After all of the concrete is repaired this deck will receive another traffic coating.

Testing the Flowability of MP Grout

These pictures are from a demo where US SPEC MP Grout was mixed for a WYDOT project to take place later this spring. The demo was done to show how well MP Grout, when mixed at the "flowable" water ratio, would pump even with the addition of pea gravel. A pump designed for use with aggregate is required for this. The grout flowed well, had a good open time and was approved for use on the project.

Eliminating Trip Hazards with H2

The following pictures are from an area in front of a set of steel stairs. The existing concrete and the stairs did not meet up as designed. The concrete on the landings needed to be ground down and feather edged into the existing grade. Doing this eliminated trip hazards and smoothed out the transitions from stair to concrete or concrete to stair depending on which direction one was traveling the stairs.

The product selected was US SPEC H2. H2 is a two component product that has great abrasion resistance and bonds tenaciously to properly prepared substrates. With the high pedestrian traffic this area will see and future snow removal, as the area is not completely covered, H2 should provide a lasting repair that cosmetically closely matches the existing concrete.

Successful Cold Weather Grouting

The following is a grouting project taking place in Southern Colorado. This portion of the project is a pump station being constructed. Highlighted here are some good cold weather precautions taken to ensure that the grout and the substrates were conditioned to the recommended temperatures. The contractor used a ground thaw unit to heat the steel "cans" as well as the concrete bases supporting them. They ran lines around the bases and under where the grout was to be placed and then covered the areas to be grouted with insulated concrete blankets. The grout was kept inside a container and kept as warm as possible. The water for the project was stored in a drum that was wrapped in a heating blanket. The mixed grout was averaging 70+ degrees and the substrates were 45-50 degrees and rising. All the efforts resulted in a successful grout placement.

Determining Products for a Historical Building

This is a floor of an older, historic house in Colorado. The house is in the process of being restored and a US SPEC representative was called out to look at the existing floors to see what kind of prep was needed before any underlayments or toppings could be placed. The floor had a previous topping slab of roughly 2” that was already removed. This left the floor very rough and uneven. The plan was to either use a skim coat patch and simply smooth out the floor or use a self-leveling product. Some of the determining factors are the final finishes of the floors are still being decided. A radiant heat system is intended to be used, the floors were shot to get their elevations and see how much room there was. The thickness of the radiant heat system and the hard wood floors will determine what can be used. The floor will still have to be mechanically abraded, and cleaned before any product can be applied. This is just one example of how much thought and planning can go into a flooring system to ensure everything else will work in the end.

Cracking Grout

Because this grout was not shaved at a 45 degree angle, it cracked and looked more dramatic than it needed to. The crack does not travel beneath the bearing plate.

Unique Application of Quickset 20

This is US SPEC Quickset 20 being used by a precast concrete manufacturer. They use Quickset 20 for various types of repairs on their products. The color is a nice, light concrete gray and closely matches the color of their production pieces. The non-sag formula eliminates the need for any form work and the faster setting nature of Quickset allows the pieces needing repair to be sent on down the line. The exposed aggregate photo is a unique application of Quickset 20. In the photo there is a repair done with Quickset 20. After placing and shaping the material the applicator took aggregate and placed it in the material. Then the aggregate was covered with more material and allowed to partially set. After this, the area was washed and rinsed till the repair closely matched the existing exposed aggregate. Another example of the versatility of Quickset 20.

What Not To Do: Flowtop HD

Flowtop HD was used and delaminated. You can clearly see the sub floor had a flat non-abraded surface.  We recommend scarifying or shot blasting the surface to ICRI chip #5.  They also overwatered the Flowtop which caused a soft clay like surface.

Failed Application of Monofilm

In this case the contractor was using a brush to spread Monofilm on the surface that was being finished. Monofilm is designed to be sprayed on the surface of freshly placed concrete to form a thin barrier to prevent the surface from drying out either from sun, wind or a combination of the both.  When over applied and worked into the surface this can weaken the cement paste on the surface by overwatering and altering the water to cement ratio. Similar results are seen when people “bless” the slab with water. The result of this is spalling. Freeze thaw conditions will speed up the process of the spalling.  This is more of a cosmetic issue but does cause unsightly areas of concrete on your slab. The only way to fix this is to remove any loose unsound areas with either mechanical means or a high power pressure washer. After all the unsound material is removed a polymer modified topping can be used to resurface the area and finish to the existing concretes finish. US SPEC NU-Top can be used for such repairs.

Good Surface Preparation

The existing concrete was spalling on the surface, the contractor saw cut around the areas that appeared unsound. After saw cutting a minimum of ½ inch, a bushing hammer was used to remove the loose unsound material, then a 5000 PSI pressure washer was used to help ensure any loose material was removed. The substrate was rough and sound ready to receive a patching material. The contractor used burlap and soaked it overnight to help get a SSD (Saturated Surface Dry) surface. This prevents a dry substrate from sucking moisture out of freshly placed patching materials.
